Food-N-Moves 4U Research Intervention
This year Unity School is offering the Food-N-Moves 4 U program to students. This program aims to make nutrition education and physical activity a part of academic subjects during the school day. The Food-N-Moves 4 U program does not take time away from academic subjects.
Food-N-Moves 4 U was developed by the University of Southern Maine, Muskie School of Public Service. Schools participating in similar programs in Maine have reported an increase in students feeling less stress, having a better ability to focus, improved academic performance and getting in fewer fights.
In order for children to maintain good health, current national guidelines recommend 60 minutes of physical activity per day. Additionally, learning about healthy food choices is key in developing lifelong healthy habits. Food-N-Moves 4 U will provide your child with 10-20 minutes per day of physical activity and nutrition education while at school. This will be accomplished by taking short stretch breaks throughout the day, learning about the importance of good nutrition, being a part of active classroom lessons, sampling healthy foods, or taking a short walk between subjects. Providing short breaks for physical activity during the school day and putting nutrition education into lessons already being taught will help to improve your child’s physical health.
Students will complete a survey early in the school year and again at the end of the school year. The survey measures nutrition and physical activity knowledge, behavior and attitudes. The surveys, administered by Muskie School staff and Unity teachers, will be used to help improve the program. If you have any questions or concerns regarding the program, please contact your school principal and/ or the Food-N-Moves 4 U team.
